This astrological portrait of your child is intended to give you insight into her unique gifts and challenges. Much of a child's behavior which may puzzle or stymie her parents are quite normal, common "developmental stages" of childhood, and there are a number of fine books available on the subject which illuminate the predictable stages that children experience as they unfold. In addition to the universal patterns, each child is an individual with particular qualities, potentials, and needs, and an understanding of these can help you parent your child more wisely and effectively. Acceptance and appreciation for a child's basic nature, and an awareness of the places where there might be stress or difficulties for your child, can be important allies in your parenting.
You will find that the interpretation of your child's chart is written in simple language, uncluttered by astrological jargon. If a statement appears to contradict another statement, then she exhibits these opposite qualities at different times in her life. For example, a statement that she is highly sociable and gregarious and a statement that you prefer solitude seemingly contradict each other; this means that she vacillates, and needs both sociability and solitude at different times.

ASCENDANT
The RISING SIGN in the birthchart (also known as the Ascendant) shows how this child faces life, her basic attitude or stance toward the world, the way she comes across, and how she appears to others.
Cancer Rising:
Julia has a rather soft appearance and a gentle, sympathetic manner that makes her very approachable. There is also a quiet, serious, reserved quality about her, or at least that can easily be one's first impression of her. As a child she is inclined to be rather timid or shy until she really becomes familiar with a person or situation. She will hold back and quietly assess everything first. Once she decides to trust someone, she is a very devoted and faithful supporter and friend. She makes very close bonds, her loyalty runs deep, and she has trouble letting go of familiar people and places.
Being a creature of habit, she finds a regular schedule very comforting. She likes to know what to expect, and she can become unusually attached to her routine or to particular belongings (a rocking chair, "security blanket," special cup, etc.). Actually, once she becomes accustomed to anything, she is not inclined to change it.
Julia has a tender-hearted side which is readily apparent to others. She is very sensitive to criticism, rejection, or harsh treatment in any form, so she is unlikely to require much in the way of strong, forceful disciplinary measures. A few words of reproach or even a disapproving warning glance will usually suffice.
Sometimes she can be quite unreasonable. She approaches the world in a very subjective, emotional, personal way and she cannot always give clear reasons for her choices or feelings. If you want to get through to her, you must appeal to her heart rather than her head, and this will be true throughout her life. Logic alone just will not suffice.
Julia is also rather sentimental, so do not throw away those mementoes of babyhood and childhood. She is likely to hold onto them and cherish them dearly in later years.
Asc. Sextile Uranus:
Julia enjoys experimenting, making changes, and being original or a little different. To others, she seems unusual and perhaps unconventional or eccentric in her manners and behaving.
Asc. Trine Neptune:
Julia blends into her surroundings and seems to absorb or pick up other people's behavior and emotions, so it is important for her to be in a healthy, positive environment. She has a gentle, yielding quality about her, and she is rather impressionable as a child.
She loves fantasy play and imaginative, whimsical games. She may seem a bit other-worldly at times.
SUN
The SUN in the birthchart represents who this child is at heart, her primary thrust in life, and what path she needs to follow in order to fulfill herself as a unique individual. It indicates who she is inside rather than the way she appears (which is shown more clearly by the Rising Sign).
Sun in Scorpio:
Julia is a child of powerful feelings, emotional extremes, and great sensitivity and depth, sometimes marked by a rather quiet demeanor. At heart she is a very private, even secretive, soul, and her need for a room of her own, or a hideaway in the backyard, or some other personal, unassailable place where she can be alone at times, is quite strong. She may well be sociable and friendly enough, but she likes to be the one in control of when, and with whom, she shares herself. She is much more inclined to have a few very close friends than to have a wide circle of playmates. She is often slow to open herself up to a new person, but the bonds of attachment and loyalty are quite strong once she has made a friend; and if a playmate moves away, you might be surprised at the depth of hurt and sadness she feels. Logical explanations and reassurances will do little to comfort her. She simply has to go through her period of grief or anger or whatever her reaction is, until it is finished. Her feelings tend to run hot or cold - she loves you or she hates you (sometimes both!), with equal fervor. There is a rather dramatic emotional side to her, and it may seem that she exaggerates her feelings. She is rarely lukewarm.
Julia has a gift for reading the unspoken motives and feelings of other people which is often uncanny, and it makes her less inclined to believe superficial appearances or simple, pat answers to her often penetrating questions. Especially if she feels that you are hiding something or do not want to deal with a particular topic, she will dig and probe and will not let it alone until her desire to know what is REALLY going on is satisfied. In fact, difficult or taboo subjects seem to especially fascinate her, so be prepared to give some simple but honest answers to her questions about complex relationships, sex, death, and so on. The study of the cycles of birth, development, and death found in nature would be very interesting to her. She has a particularly strong affinity for animals and would cherish a pet.
Julia is very persistent and strong-willed and capable of great concentration. You are unlikely to be able to change her or redirect her attention very easily. But this capacity for focus and wholehearted involvement is her gift and will enable her to achieve a great deal when she is older.
Sun in 4th house:
"Home is where the heart is" for this child, and she needs a lot of private time at home to reflect and regroup after being out in the world. Too many scheduled activities outside the home--lessons, playgroups, or what-have-you--go against her grain. After school, she may want to go to her room for a while, or just stay at home, rather than rush out to play. She also has a deep interest in her heritage and roots. Family traditions and rituals give her a strong sense of security and identity, and parents shouldn't make the mistake of believing she'll outgrow such things.
Sun Sextile Mars:
Julia is quite lively and energetic, and she cannot tolerate being inactive or kept still for very long. She likes to be on the go. Her health and vitality are quite strong, and she prefers outdoor activities and projects to quieter pastimes.
Sun Sextile Jupiter:
Julia may well have more than an average amount of "good luck" or benefits flowing to her. Success and opportunities come more easily to her than to others, and she will have an abundance of gifts to be grateful for. She is also an open, giving person and she shares generously with her friends. The only negative possibility is that she may become lax and expect everything to be handed to her.
MERCURY
MERCURY represents thinking and reasoning processes, the way your child's mind works, her intellectual inclinations and way of communicating ideas.
Mercury in Scorpio:
Julia has the mind of a researcher, spy, or private investigator: she looks below the surface appearances of things and is fascinated by anything secretive, hidden, or mysterious. She is likely to be rather quiet, but when she does speak, her words have a strong bite. A definite interest in biology, animals, or nature studies is likely.
Mercury in 4th house:
Julia will thrive in an intellectual atmosphere, or a home in which intelligence and education are valued. Being included in family discussions and conversations from an early age will foster her thinking and reasoning abilities. History, genealogy, art, and/or archaeology are likely to be lifelong interests.
MOON
The MOON in the birthchart indicates how she deals with and expresses feelings, how she experiences the world on an emotional, feeling, non-verbal level, what her emotional needs are, and what she needs to feel secure, comfortable and at ease.
Moon in Leo:
Warm, sunny, cheerful, and something of a "ham," this child thrives on being the center of attention. She loves having an audience and she is likely to have some boisterous attention-grabbing techniques that are none too subtle, if she feels she is being ignored.
"Notice me! Love me! Tell me I'm wonderful!" may well be the underlying message of much of her behavior. She simply suffers if her specialness, her uniqueness, and her abilities are not noticed and appreciated. If she is given any encouragement at all, she will do her utmost to stand out, to be the best. She has a deep inner sense of nobility and pride and she very much needs respect, as well as the love and affection all children require. (Never ridicule or make fun of her, especially in public.) Given plenty of praise and love, no child will be more devoted, adoring, wholeheartedly loving, and affectionate than she is.
On the other hand, if she is lavished with adulation and made too much of, she is likely to become rather narcissistic, and to have a lop-sided sense of her own importance, so you will need to achieve a fine balance.
There is a natural performer in her, and she needs to have a medium through which to express her dramatic, creative side, a place where she can really shine out.
Also, she likes to make her own choices and decisions, and this should be allowed for as much as possible. Try not to engage her in power struggles over matters that are really not so important. She can be intensely persistent and willful!
Moon in 2nd house:
Favorite possessions and familiar things--quilts, toys, and so on--enhance Julia's sense of security. Long after she's stopped using them, she'll want to keep them because of all the emotional energy she's invested in them. She can become a pack-rat, and her living space may become cluttered with cherished items she's loathe to discard. For the most part this harmless quirk should be indulged. However, she should perhaps be discouraged from displacing emotional needs onto material items (like an unhappy person who buys a new hat to cheer herself up). A trip to the toy store should not become her response to all of life's woes!
Moon Conjunct Jupiter:
Julia is good-natured, tolerant, open-hearted, and generous, which makes her very well-liked. She knows how to make others feel comfortable, accepted, and welcome, and she is ready to share whatever she has.
She loves parties and social events where everyone is having a good time. She can be extravagant or wasteful, also, and she tends to overindulge in comforts (i.e. overeating, overspending, etc.).
Moon Square Neptune:
Julia is a dreamer, with a sensitive, artistic temperament, and her fantastic imagination colors her perception of the world.
She is strongly influenced by the emotional atmosphere in her home, and she feels the unspoken feelings of those around her very easily. She is likely to be hypersensitive to any disharmony in her surroundings. She responds much better to gentleness than to sternness.
VENUS
VENUS represents the way your child gives and receives affection, makes friends, and socializes. It also indicates artistic or creative inclinations.
Venus in Virgo:
Julia is discriminating in her choice of friends, and she may seem rather shy or modest when it comes to making friends. She likes to do things for others. Helping and serving are ways she shows her affection.
Venus in 2nd house:
This child loves to give and receive presents. She has an eye for quality and beauty, too, and is probably offended by cheap imitations or shabbiness of any kind. She won't mind spending her entire allowance on some beautiful, unnecessary thing. If she's introduced to fine art at an early age, she'll develop a lifelong appreciation of it.
Venus Conjunct Pluto:
Julia's feelings are so strong and she becomes so deeply, intensely bonded to the people she loves, that she often loses all perspective about them. She is prone to jealousy or to try to control her friends, and she needs to learn that she will not lose their affection if she gives them their freedom.
MARS
MARS represents your child's drive, ambition, will, energy level, and ability to assert herself.
Mars in Capricorn:
Julia knows how to conserve, focus, and direct her energy into productive channels, and she does not like to waste or dissipate her energy. She is not inclined to be reckless or take foolish risks, and sometimes she holds back her exuberance or assertiveness.
Mars in 6th house:
Julia is a "worker bee" who works hard at the tasks, chores, and plans she sets for herself. She likes to be organized because she feels she can get a lot done that way. She'll want to be gainfully employed at an early age, and she's not averse to working her way up from the bottom.
Mars Square Saturn:
Julia seems to struggle a lot and to feel at times that life is a lot of hard work. She may be very inhibited about asserting herself, fearing that her will and desires will be blocked if she openly declares herself. She withholds her anger, too. She needs a lot of encouragement and acceptance in order to build up her confidence.
Mars Trine Jupiter:
Julia has a sort of easy, natural confidence that she is inclined to take for granted, and she often succeeds at her aims without a great deal of effort or struggle. She has an abundance of energy and vitality, and she enjoys competition while at the same time keeping a perspective about it and not taking defeat too seriously.
JUPITER
JUPITER in the birthchart reveals the child's future aspirations, and how she seeks to grow and improve herself. It also indicates areas of natural confidence, success, or "luck."
Jupiter in Virgo:
Julia is spontaneously and generously helpful. She sincerely enjoys serving others, assisting the teacher, or being Mom or Dad's faithful helper. And while she certainly appreciates praise for a job well done, she feels the greatest satisfaction in doing the job. She's also clearly aware of her need for improvement and generally accepts criticism quite willingly. In fact, she frequently turns away from compliments or applause. She has an appealing natural humility.
Sometimes other children may see her as "too good," and truth be told, Julia can be a bit too exacting, sometimes even a bit preachy, about following the rules.
Jupiter in 2nd house:
Money and material advantages matter quite a lot to Julia, and because she will settle for only the finest quality, that's what she'll attain. (Parents may sigh when she insists on designer apparel or the most expensive pair of shoes.) She'll also want to give the most generous presents, even to casual acquaintances who might invite her to their birthday parties.
While generally "lucky" with finances, she may be wasteful or irresponsible with her money as a youngster, because she's sure "there's plenty more where that came from." Teaching her a little discipline along with that faith will be helpful to her in the long run.
SATURN
The position of SATURN in your child's birthchart indicates the areas in which she is especially insecure, about which she is most serious, and/or in which she works hardest or is hardest on herself. It also reveals those weaknesses which, through effort, may become her greatest strengths.
Saturn in Aries:
Julia is especially hard on herself when she lacks courage, and she secretly fears being weak or "wimpy." Because of this fear, she may put on a false show of bravado--an untouchable, unreachable, I-don't-need-you attitude--even (or especially) when she's really afraid or in pain.
She needs to be encouraged to take some risks, to discover that she won't die if she makes a mistake, doesn't come in first, or actually makes a fool of herself now and then. She tends to hold herself back sometimes just to avoid the criticism or punishment she expects will follow if she stands up for herself. Strict, militaristic discipline from parents or teachers can be very destructive, yet she responds to and respects firmness and strength. If too much emphasis is placed on conforming to rigid external standards or on controlling herself and her impulses, she's apt to become chronically sullen and angry.
If, however, she is given a lot of encouragement and nurtured in an atmosphere of acceptance, she can develop into an exceptionally self-reliant person, able and willing to stand alone when she needs to. Her tendency to isolate herself or be a loner is a trait that she shares with many of her agemates.
Saturn in 9th house:
Accepting other people's beliefs, faith, or outlook on life won't always be easy for Julia. Unless she's encouraged to be tolerant and open-minded, she may limit her experience considerably because of this lack of imagination or inability to visualize different ways of seeing and doing things. Becoming personally acquainted with people whose cultures or religions differ from her own can help to break down barriers and prevent the development of a narrow, insular attitude.
MOON'S NODES
The Lunar Nodes are points formed by the moon's orbit around the Earth intersecting with the Earth's path around the Sun. These sensitive "power points" in our child's chart give vital information about those areas of life experience that she will instinctively be drawn to in order to fulfill her life purposes, as well as qualities she needs to develop and express in order to do so. They show where she can be most successful as she unfolds her natural talent
North Node in 10th House in Aries:
Julia's life path involves rising to prominence, coming into the public eye, attracting attention and receiving recognition for what she does. Her life path requires that she become visible and active in the world in some way influencing, shaping, and contributing to the greater good. There may seem to be an element of luck, of being in the right place at the right time, and she's instinctively drawn to influential people (as they are to her), but having a strong, supportive foundation to fuel her aspirations is certainly as important. She needs to be encouraged to participate and put herself out into the world.
The qualities Julia needs in order to succeed in this endeavor are boldness, self-reliance, and the courage to take risks and make her own mistakes. Encourage her to be pro-active and to trust herself.
GENERATIONAL INFLUENCES
The slow-moving planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto represent the ideals, changes, and impulses of an entire generation. While the descriptions below may or may not describe your child as an individual, they will tell you about the climate of the times and the underlying issues and challenges of your child's age group.
For instance, when Neptune (which represents one's spiritual ideals, dreams, aspirations, fantasies and illusions) passed through the egalitarian and harmony-loving sign of Libra (from 1943-1957), the children who would grow into the "flower children," hippies, and supporters of the peace movement were born. Not every person born during that time became a hippie or identified themselves with the peace movement, but certainly they were affected by the feeling-tone and ideals of their age group and the times they grew up in. Thus, the following information is intended to give you insight into the important motifs and issues of your child's generation.
URANUS indicates where the impulse for change, innovation, liberation from the past, and experimentation with new forms is the strongest. It is where the status quo is disrupted or uprooted to make way for something new. Sudden inspiration and invention are also represented by Uranus.
Uranus in Virgo:
In this age group (1962-1969), there is a great deal of conflict and tension, for there is a conservative, cautious element and a very critical, disruptive, discontented aspect to these children as well.
They are concerned with and will bring about innovative change in education, health and medical care, and other social services. They may adopt unusual diets or health practices, and they tend to go to extremes in these areas.
Uranus in 3rd house:
Julia thinks and learns in unusual ways. Her mind is inspired and she grasps concepts whole, but it may be difficult for her to understand or explain her ideas in a linear way. She is interested in new thought and leading edge ideas in any field. Quick, lively, active presentations of material, and an approach that encourages her to think for herself and invent new solutions will work best for her.
Uranus Conjunct Pluto:
Julia was born in powerful, tumultuous times when great upheavals, reversals, and changes were occuring in society. She carries the imprint and energies of those times and is part of a group of souls who are here to shake the world up in some fundamental ways. A deep streak of radical impatience runs through them.
Uranus Sextile Neptune:
Julia is part of a generation who is very receptive to new ideas about consciousness, reality, and spirituality. Open minded and universal on the whole, they embrace both science and religion as ways to understand life. They are not frightened of nonordinary states of consciuosness or inner experience, either.
NEPTUNE represents the quest for the ideal, the dream, for something more sublime. The sign it is passing through at the time of one's birth colors one's spiritual aspirations and ideals, and also indicates where the desire to escape reality, to fantasize, deceive oneself, and become lost in illusion is the strongest.
Neptune in Scorpio:
A fascination with the strange, hidden, and mysterious characterizes this age group (1956-1970), and they have a deep attraction to esotericism and psychic or occult powers. Powerfully emotional, mesmerizing, or haunting music is likely to come out of this group. They are likely to be confused over sexual mores and to idealize or be unbalanced and extreme in their attitudes toward sex.
Neptune in 4th house:
Julia has a very dreamy, sensitive, and private side and she needs a tranquil place to retreat to from time to time. She would love to live in a beautiful natural setting, perhaps near water, and if her home is not nurturing and serene she will conjure such a place in her imagination. Home as sanctuary is very important to this child.
Neptune Sextile Pluto:
Those born during this generation have the opportunity to advance spirituality and a consciousness of unity, universality, and brother/sisterhood. Only a few individuals may heed the call, but many will be influenced by them.
PLUTO in the birth chart indicates a process of deep change, transformation, and renewal, often through destruction or confrontation with darkness. This is a process that takes place in society as well as in individuals. Pluto's position in the birth chart shows where one is compulsive, extreme, or learning key life lessons.
Pluto in Virgo:
This group (born 1957-1971) as a whole is intensely analytical and may indulge in destructive self-criticism. Feelings of inadequacy, impurity, or discontent plague them at times. Being overly fastidious or perfectionistic about their bodies or their environment is likely.
One of the challenges this group will confront involves cleaning up the toxins and overindulgent, excessive behaviors of previous generations which have damaged the ecological balance of the earth. Temperance, moderation, and self-discipline regarding the use of one's body and physical resources will be an important issue for them, also. Health practices, medicine, nutrition, and healing will undergo profound changes and transformation.
Pluto in 3rd house:
Julia has a probing mind and she loves to delve into complex, difficult, or deep subjects. She could be an excellent student but she's apt to have one-sided or narrowly focused interests, to pursue them obsessively, and to negect other areas. Her tendency to ask intensely personal questions or to "grill" you even in a casual conversation may put people off at times, (what was charming and amusing at four is much less so at fourteen). Relationships with siblings may be thorny also. Parents or other caregivers should be alert to any potential abuses or toxic dynamics between Julia and her brothers and/or sisters.
