This astrological portrait of your child is intended to give you insight into his unique gifts and challenges. Much of a child's behavior which may puzzle or stymie his parents are quite normal, common "developmental stages" of childhood, and there are a number of fine books available on the subject which illuminate the predictable stages that children experience as they unfold. In addition to the universal patterns, each child is an individual with particular qualities, potentials, and needs, and an understanding of these can help you parent your child more wisely and effectively. Acceptance and appreciation for a child's basic nature, and an awareness of the places where there might be stress or difficulties for your child, can be important allies in your parenting.

You will find that the interpretation of your child's chart is written in simple language, uncluttered by astrological jargon. If a statement appears to contradict another statement, then he exhibits these opposite qualities at different times in his life. For example, a statement that he is highly sociable and gregarious and a statement that you prefer solitude seemingly contradict each other; this means that he vacillates, and needs both sociability and solitude at different times.

ASCENDANT

The RISING SIGN in the birthchart (also known as the Ascendant) shows how this child faces life, his basic attitude or stance toward the world, the way he comes across, and how he appears to others.

Cancer Rising:

Michael has a rather soft appearance and a gentle, sympathetic manner that makes him very approachable. There is also a quiet, serious, reserved quality about him, or at least that can easily be one's first impression of him. As a child he is inclined to be rather timid or shy until he really becomes familiar with a person or situation. He will hold back and quietly assess everything first. Once he decides to trust someone, he is a very devoted and faithful supporter and friend. He makes very close bonds, his loyalty runs deep, and he has trouble letting go of familiar people and places.

Being a creature of habit, he finds a regular schedule very comforting. He likes to know what to expect, and he can become unusually attached to his routine or to particular belongings (a rocking chair, "security blanket," special cup, etc.). Actually, once he becomes accustomed to anything, he is not inclined to change it.

Michael has a tender-hearted side which is readily apparent to others. He is very sensitive to criticism, rejection, or harsh treatment in any form, so he is unlikely to require much in the way of strong, forceful disciplinary measures. A few words of reproach or even a disapproving warning glance will usually suffice.

Sometimes he can be quite unreasonable. He approaches the world in a very subjective, emotional, personal way and he cannot always give clear reasons for his choices or feelings. If you want to get through to him, you must appeal to his heart rather than his head, and this will be true throughout his life. Logic alone just will not suffice.

Michael is also rather sentimental, so do not throw away those mementoes of babyhood and childhood. He is likely to hold onto them and cherish them dearly in later years.

Asc. Opposition Venus:

Friendship, partnership, and comradery are very important to Michael, so much so that it is hard for him to imagine going it alone. He is very affectionate and sociable and needs to have people around him. He avoids disagreements and promotes harmony as much as he can; sometimes he tries too hard to please and to win others' affection and approval. He often smiles and appears pleasant, even when he is not feeling good inside.

Asc. Trine Neptune:

Michael blends into his surroundings and seems to absorb or pick up other people's behavior and emotions, so it is important for him to be in a healthy, positive environment. He has a gentle, yielding quality about him, and he is rather impressionable as a child.

He loves fantasy play and imaginative, whimsical games. He may seem a bit other-worldly at times.

Asc. Sextile Pluto:

Anything hidden, secretive, mysterious, or taboo holds great fascination for Michael, and he questions and probes until he gets answers. He loves to investigate the unknown.

SUN

The SUN in the birthchart represents who this child is at heart, his primary thrust in life, and what path he needs to follow in order to fulfill himself as a unique individual. It indicates who he is inside rather than the way he appears (which is shown more clearly by the Rising Sign).

Sun in Aquarius:

Independent-minded and strong-willed, Michael has his own ideas about how things should be done, and they often do not conform to any already-existing standards or patterns. In fact, he seems to positively delight in challenging custom and convention. Born with a strong need to experiment, he is drawn to the novel and unusual in people, ideas, fashions, and lifestyles. Innovation, originality, inventiveness, and discovering new or alternative ways of doing things are his trademark. Much flexibility, open-mindedness, and tolerance will be required of his parents, for he is likely to overturn all sorts of precedents in his own distinctly individual manner. His development may proceed in an erratic, zigzag sort of way. He will probably develop rapidly in some areas, and lag behind in others, and his timing tends to be somewhat different than the norm, so that comparing him to the "typical" or "average" child in the standard child-care manuals may be confusing or useless.

Michael has little regard for tradition and the authority of the past, and "That's the way it has always been done here" or "You will do it because I'm your Father, and I said so" just are not sufficient explanations for him. He is quite logical and intelligent, and he needs to have a clear reason for everything.

Michael is also quite social, and he shines when he is with other children - the more, the merrier. Inherently idealistic, democratic, and fair, he does not like to discriminate or to exclude anyone, and he may not even have a favorite playmate. ("Everyone is my friend.")  He maintains his independence and a certain detachment, even with his best friends. When he is with his buddies, he will often try to organize and coordinate everyone's activities so that each person gets a turn, and also so that everything happens as HE thinks it should. He usually has strong, fixed ideas about things.

Michael lets his head rule rather than his heart, and he needs to be encouraged to feel and empathize more. If he develops an emotional sensitivity towards others, he is likely to become a true humanitarian.

Sun in 8th house:

Even as a young child, Michael will be intrigued by things which are mysterious, hidden, or "taboo," and he may make embarrassing or awkward inquiries about people's sex lives, finances, and other private matters--including beliefs about death and the possibility of an afterlife.  If he's raised in a home where such probing curiosity is unwelcome, he'll probably become secretive; even in a fairly open and communicative atmosphere, he may keep a lot to himself.  He's a deeper person than many of his contemporaries.

MERCURY

MERCURY represents thinking and reasoning processes, the way your child's mind works, his intellectual inclinations and way of communicating ideas.

Mercury in Aquarius:

Forward-looking and progressive in his thinking, Michael is interested in the latest scientific discoveries, new technologies, and the most daring, original, and experimental ideas in any area he studies. He also has an idealistic frame of mind, and is likely to be stubbornly opinionated on many topics.

Mercury in 7th house:

This child likes to talk with people and find out how they think, and he'll follow you around the house and "talk your ears off" in an attempt to converse with you.  He may be a chatterbox in school too, and the telephone may well be his favorite "toy"!

MOON

The MOON in the birthchart indicates how he deals with and expresses feelings, how he experiences the world on an emotional, feeling, non-verbal level, what his emotional needs are, and what he needs to feel secure, comfortable and at ease.

Moon in Sagittarius:

Michael has a generous, open friendliness about him, a buoyant optimism and cheerfulness, that is quite appealing. He has a natural self confidence that enables him to take risks and to leap headlong into the unknown with delightful and refreshing abandon. Even if he fails dismally, he is quite resilient, both emotionally and otherwise, and he is even inclined to be philosophical about it all.

Ever eager to explore his world, he heartily dislikes being restricted or held back in any way, and he does not readily understand what "off limits" means. He has a strong sense of adventure and usually responds well to new situations and people, especially if they appear to promise something new and exciting. He is flexible, adapts well to change, and is open to trying new things (like unusual foods) more than most children. (He may, in fact, have some rather sophisticated or exotic tastes.)  Unless he is getting sick or there is something really troubling him, he will not be a very clinging, dependent, needy child. In fact, you might wish he needed you more or was more of a cuddler. He has a sort of breezy independence, even at a young age.

Michael is likely to test your authority quite a lot, and though he definitely needs to know that there are firm rules and boundaries, he does not respond well to strong directives or commands. If you (respectfully!) ask him to comply with your wishes, he MIGHT. It is not that he is likely to openly rebel against your rules, but he will good-humoredly ignore them or go around them as much as he can, and no amount of sternness is likely to really change him. He is a very gregarious, sociable child, however, and not allowing him to see a playmate for a certain length of time can be very effective with him. Using humor to coax him out of a recalcitrant mood also works very well with him. He has a great sense of fun.

Moon in 5th house:

Michael likes to dramatize his feelings, and he has a "hammy" side that enjoys performing for an appreciative audience.  He hides little and, given encouragement, will dominate any scene with his emotional theatrics and charm.

He can be cheered or lifted out of a sour mood with games and other diversions, and no matter what his age, he will always have a playful, childlike side.

Moon Square Pluto:

Michael has a very intense, dramatic, stormy, emotional side, and he can very easily get swept up in his powerful feelings. He may appear to be unaffected by a situation, and later erupt with a great outburst of emotion.

He forms very deep emotional bonds to others, and has trouble letting go of the people or places he becomes attached to. Jealousy and possessiveness can be troublesome for him at times.

Moon Trine Mars:

Michael enjoys vigorous play and is enthusiastic about games, sports, and competitions of all sorts. He gets grouchy and overly rambunctious if he does not release enough physical energy. He is also impulsive and displays his feelings very spontaneously and directly. Sometimes he is brusque and impatient with people as well.

VENUS

VENUS represents the way your child gives and receives affection, makes friends, and socializes. It also indicates artistic or creative inclinations.

Venus in Capricorn:

Michael takes friendship seriously and is careful about showing his affection until he is certain the other person is trustworthy and reliable. You have to win his friendship or prove yourself to him. Once he takes you into his heart, he is a loyal, faithful, true-blue friend.

Venus in 7th house:

This child will never lack love, affection, friends, or companions.  He has an appealing warmth that melts hearts.  He will often play the role of mediator, peacemaker or harmonizer. He especially delights in seeing love expressed between his parents and other adult couples in his life.

Venus Trine Pluto:

Michael's need for love and closeness is very strong, and he becomes intensely attached to his friends and the people he cares for. He is also very attractive or charming, and he may use this to subtly control or manipulate people, especially if he feels that he is not getting enough affection. Positively, he has unusual creative abilities and could pour his strong feelings into artistic or creative work.

Venus Sextile Neptune:

Michael is very sensitive to beauty, and he has a rich artistic imagination. Fairy tales or imaginary lands of his own creation enthrall him, and he should be encouraged to develop his interests in art, theater, or music.

MARS

MARS represents your child's drive, ambition, will, energy level, and ability to assert himself.

Mars in Leo:

Michael's vitality and energy level is high. He plays hard and he plays to win. Losing or being second are intolerable to him, especially while he is young. His will and determination are formidable!

Mars in 2nd house:

When Michael sets his goals or decides what he wants, he works very hard to get it.  He can be territorial, too, and possessive about his things.  It's not so much that he doesn't want to share as that he wants control over what's his.

JUPITER

JUPITER in the birthchart reveals the child's future aspirations, and how he seeks to grow and improve himself.  It also indicates areas of natural confidence, success, or "luck."

Jupiter in Pisces:

Michael's compassion and charitable instincts are pronounced, and he will delight in such things as collecting and distributing food for the needy at holiday time, helping elderly neighbors or shut-ins, or even giving away his own toys or clothes to a child who has less than he.  In fact, greedy or opportunistic children may sense that they can take advantage of him.

Anyone who is mistreated or in need of rescue particularly moves him, and he may want to give his allowance to the animal shelter--or just as likely, bring all those stray critters home.

His future aspirations are never narrowly self-serving.  He wants to helps others and improve the world--not just his own life.

Jupiter in 9th house:

Michael is an insatiable learner, and is extremely interested in anything new, exotic, or foreign--be it ideas, people, or even food.  Naturally cosmopolitan, he'll want to travel widely to expand his understanding of the world.  Parents and teachers may notice that after a trip to a faraway or previously unexplored place, he's remarkably more confident and buoyant.  A subscription to National Geographic magazine would inspire him. He would truly enjoy sponsoring a foreign exchange student, or being one himself.  Tolerant of cultural or other differences among people, he's apt to acquire a wide variety of friends.

Jupiter Trine Neptune:

Michael seeks to grow by having faith and trusting in the unseen forces to provide for and assist him. Mostly this will work in his favor, but at times he expects God to do all the work and he could be to passive and unrealistic at times.  He's a very generous soul and enjoys helping other children, animals, and others who are vulnerable or in need.

SATURN

The position of SATURN in your child's birthchart indicates the areas in which he is especially insecure, about which he is most serious, and/or in which he works hardest or is hardest on himself.  It also reveals those weaknesses which, through effort, may become his greatest strengths.

Saturn in Aquarius:

Comparing himself to other people with an eye to fitting in and being acceptable to the group can be Michael's personal demon. Because of this, he may scorn people who don't conform to whatever fashion or standard is currently favored by the group he has selected.  As a youngster, he will value his friends, his peers, and require their approval.

A fear of being different--an oddball or a black sheep, can inhibit his inventiveness and creativity.  He's cautious about deviating too far from the ideals of his milieu.  On the other hand, unless he finds a meaningful connection to some group, he's likely to feel isolated and alienated from society in general.  He may resent "having to" fit in, acceding to the restraints and constraints of "acceptable" social mores.  There's nothing much a parent or other adult can do about any of this except look with an understanding eye on his efforts to be part of things.  Lectures on the virtues of independence, thinking for oneself, etc., will fall on deaf ears.

An acute and demanding social conscience may also plague Michael at times.  He'll worry about the world.  Helping him find concrete ways to contribute and make the world a better place would be beneficial, as would focusing on the positive aspects of world events.  As a preschooler or kindergartner, he might enjoy reading the story of Miss Rumphius by Barbara Coombs.

Saturn in 8th house:

Almost any change in Michael's life is perceived by him primarily as a loss rather than as an opportunity to experience something new.  He needs time to grieve and to talk about his feelings, otherwise he'll have a particularly hard time saying good-bye and letting go.  It can be comforting for him to have something tangible, a keepsake or memento, to remind him of the old neighborhood, the preschool he "graduated" from, etc.

Michael may also have a pronounced fear of--or a fascination with--death and the dark.

Saturn Square Neptune:

Michael is apt to go through periods of doubt, discouragement, or pessimism, espcecially regarding his own possibilities and/or the state of the world.  Negative and dispiriting messages from the media can have a pernicious effect upon him, parents may want to limit his exposure to escially morbid images.  Religious teachings that are punitive, frightening, and guilt-produncing are also unhealthy for him.  His imagination needs to be encouraged along wholesome, hopeful, and uplifting lines.

MOON'S NODES

The Lunar Nodes are points formed by the moon's orbit around the Earth intersecting with the Earth's path around the Sun. These sensitive "power points" in our child's chart give vital information about those areas of life experience that he will instinctively be drawn to in order to fulfill his life purposes, as well as qualities he needs to develop and express in order to do so. They show where he can be most successful as he unfolds his natural talent

North Node in 1st House in Cancer:

Michael's path in life requires that he focus on pursuing his own personal interests, desires, and inner directives. He must resist the pull of excessive concern over other people's approval or disapproval of him. Michael is meant to be a solo act, and therefore the more he concentrates on his own development (whether material or spiritual), the more he fulfills his destiny. He makes a contribution to life by focusing on his own individuality and being himself as fully as he can, even if this appears egotistical or overly self-involved to others. As a parent or caring elder in his life, you may be able to encourage him along these lines by paying attention to what he is drawn to and allowing him to go his own way

The qualities Michael needs in order to succeed in this endeavor are empathy, devotion, tenderness, and a willingness to be cared for in a nurturing way by other people. Encourage him to graciously receive, as well as give and support.

GENERATIONAL INFLUENCES

The slow-moving planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto represent the ideals, changes, and impulses of an entire generation. While the descriptions below may or may not describe your child as an individual, they will tell you about the climate of the times and the underlying issues and challenges of your child's age group.

For instance, when Neptune (which represents one's spiritual ideals, dreams, aspirations, fantasies and illusions) passed through the egalitarian and harmony-loving sign of Libra (from 1943-1957), the children who would grow into the "flower children," hippies, and supporters of the peace movement were born. Not every person born during that time became a hippie or identified themselves with the peace movement, but certainly they were affected by the feeling-tone and ideals of their age group and the times they grew up in. Thus, the following information is intended to give you insight into the important motifs and issues of your child's generation.

URANUS indicates where the impulse for change, innovation, liberation from the past, and experimentation with new forms is the strongest. It is where the status quo is disrupted or uprooted to make way for something new. Sudden inspiration and invention are also represented by Uranus.

Uranus in Virgo:

In this age group (1962-1969), there is a great deal of conflict and tension, for there is a conservative, cautious element and a very critical, disruptive, discontented aspect to these children as well.

They are concerned with and will bring about innovative change in education, health and medical care, and other social services. They may adopt unusual diets or health practices, and they tend to go to extremes in these areas.

Uranus in 3rd house:

Michael thinks and learns in unusual ways. His mind is inspired and she grasps concepts whole, but it may be difficult for him to understand or explain his ideas in a linear way. He is interested in new thought and leading edge ideas in any field. Quick, lively, active presentations of material, and an approach that encourages his to think for himself and invent new solutions will work best for him.

NEPTUNE represents the quest for the ideal, the dream, for something more sublime. The sign it is passing through at the time of one's birth colors one's spiritual aspirations and ideals, and also indicates where the desire to escape reality, to fantasize, deceive oneself, and become lost in illusion is the strongest.

Neptune in Scorpio:

A fascination with the strange, hidden, and mysterious characterizes this age group (1956-1970), and they have a deep attraction to esotericism and psychic or occult powers. Powerfully emotional, mesmerizing, or haunting music is likely to come out of this group. They are likely to be confused over sexual mores and to idealize or be unbalanced and extreme in their attitudes toward sex.

Neptune in 5th house:

Imagination Michael has in abundance and he may fantasize about being a "Star", as he idealizes celebrity and a larger-than-life existence.  He's drawn to entertainment or the arts and may enjoy theatre or preforming as a child.  If he has the discipline to develop his talent, his dreams could bear fruit.

PLUTO in the birth chart indicates a process of deep change, transformation, and renewal, often through destruction or confrontation with darkness.  This is a process that takes place in society as well as in individuals.  Pluto's position in the birth chart shows where one is compulsive, extreme, or learning key life lessons.

Pluto in Virgo:

This group (born 1957-1971) as a whole is intensely analytical and may indulge in destructive self-criticism. Feelings of inadequacy, impurity, or discontent plague them at times. Being overly fastidious or perfectionistic about their bodies or their environment is likely.

One of the challenges this group will confront involves cleaning up the toxins and overindulgent, excessive behaviors of previous generations which have damaged the ecological balance of the earth. Temperance, moderation, and self-discipline regarding the use of one's body and physical resources will be an important issue for them, also. Health practices, medicine, nutrition, and healing will undergo profound changes and transformation.

Pluto in 3rd house:

Michael has a probing mind and he loves to delve into complex, difficult, or deep subjects.  He could be an excellent student but he's apt to have one-sided or narrowly focused interests, to pursue them obsessively, and to negect other areas.  His tendency to ask intensely personal questions or to "grill" you even in a casual conversation may put people off at times, (what was charming and amusing at four is much less so at fourteen).  Relationships with siblings may be thorny also.  Parents or other caregivers should be alert to any potential abuses or toxic dynamics between Michael and his brothers and/or sisters.
